Where do we start redesigning our house interior ?

Q. We've just finished completely renovating our house and it's virtually unfurnished. We now want to start decorating but every interior designer we speak to says "tell us what you want". The problem is, we don't know what we want! Where do we start?

A. Start with FUNCTION.

What functions do you want this room to serve?
====================================
for instance, you may know you want it as the dining room, but do you also expect the kids to study here, for this table to be used for board games, for this room to show off collections?

Room functions seem really straightforward, so most people gloss over them without thinking, but you need to be as specific as possible about this very early. Everybody knows the function of a kitchen, but do you want to have a home office there? You know you want to entertain in your living room, but does that mean close friends, a mix of ages, cocktail parties?

after that you can go to STYLE (Victorian, Edwardian, art deco, Atomic 50s, retro 70s, neo-classic, etc.) or color or mood (beachy, plantation, nautical, dramatic, restful, etc.)
for samples of various styles, try
http://interiordec.about.com/od/stylesofdecor/

But there are lots of other places to see styles, too. On the net, in designing magazines, at your friends houses, at hotels, in restaurants.

HGTV has an on-line quiz to help you ID your style at
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/pac_ctnt_988/text/0,,HGTV_22056_33320,00.html

Anyway, pick Style, Color or Mood. Then you can work with the others.

The architecture and available sunlight will be major things that you pretty much have to work with the way they are.

if you have picked Functions, and either Style/color/mood an interior designer SHOULD be able to help. If they can't hep when you give them that info, go elsewhere.

Can anyone suggest where I could find someone who paints murals on interior walls?
Q. I've just moved house and I'm looking for someone who could paint some sportspeople (cricketers, rugby players etc) around the interior walls of my 8 year old son's room. Even a graffiti style would be fine.
I'm in Sydney.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks Chuck: unfortunately, the only ones I could find are soccer, skateboarding, basketball and grid iron. He's absolutely obsessed with rugby union/league and cricket. I'll keep looking though and thanks again.

A. May I suggest you visit your local Art College. I am sure there are a few top class would be artists who would be keen to do the work for you free as long as you let the person(s) take some pics of his/her masterpiece.

Would you pay for a commissioned painting to match your interior?
Q. Or would you prefer to buy a painting already prepared, from a shop or art dealer?
If you would commission a painting, how much would you expect to outlay?
Have you commissioned a painting before?

Just doing some market research. Thanks for your input.

A. I believe that art isn't supposed to be chosen to match one's interior decorating. It's much better to start with the piece of art, and then decorate around it. The reason: Finding a piece of art that you love isn't as easy as finding fabrics, paint colors, and furnishings that please you. You start with the hardest thing, and move toward the easiest.

If you go for a painting to match what's already in place, you'll end up with a decoration, not art.

How can i change interior roof fabric of old Manga89? is it available in market?
Q. actually due to heat, all fabric separated from car roof and just hanging on my head due to roof light and side beeding. can i change that by myself?

A. yea you can find the material at any upholstery shop. the headliner is just material stretched over a board you take down the board pull off the old material clean the area of the board where the old glue is usually will just sweep off, then lay new glue should come with material or just ask for it stretch the material and let dry then put board back up should last 10-15 years just did it on my 96 honda

How and where should I install a CB radio in the car without damaging the interior?
Q. We have a 2003 Nissan Pathfinder and want to install a CB radio with the big antenna. Where would be the best place to install it without compromising too much space??
Oh, and what are the good brands to use? Uniden?? Thanks.

A. Cobra would be the best. Unless you pay a little more for a Uniden. The less expensive ones will not impress you too much.

All come with an under the dash mount. Does little damage to the dash and what it does is done to the underside where it it less noticeable.

A good antenna? Wlison - Lil Will or the 1000 if you want performance is by far the best. It is a magnet mount for on the rooftop. A little sheet of saran wrap under the magnet will help prevent scratches.

The combination of the two will give years of performance.

:)

How do I remove an interior door knob that has no screws?
Q. I want to change the knobs on my bedroom door, but I can't get the old knob off. There are no screws on either side that I can unscrew. The only thing I managed to unscrew and remove is the latch on the side (where the protruding thing that locks into the doorframe is), but that hasn't helped at all. How can I get this doorknob off?
Ok, I pushed the tab with a flat screwdriver and pulled it and it came off. So the grasping part of the knob is off, but the part that is right against the door is still stuck fast. Btw, I can't use a hammer or do anything that would damage the door because I don't want to potentially lose my security deposit. Thanks for all the helpful answers so far.
I have added a picture of my (possibly broken) doorknob in its current state. [http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/teresis_pieces/doorknob.jpg] As you can see, still no visible screws, and I have damaged the wood on my door by attemting to pry the knob off. Any further help greatly appreciated.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/teresis_pieces/doorknob.jpg

A. On what would be considered the inside of the door there should either be a tab about 1/4" long on the side of the shaft , a small hole just larger than paper clip diameter on the shaft or a little metal clip on the plate that rests against the door. Any one of these hides the key to getting the knob off. Depress which ever one you have and the knob or plate should pull off revealing the screws that hold the lockset to the door. If the handle is what comes off, you may need to unscrew the plate against the door to reveal the screws. From there it is unmistakable how it comes apart. Remove the screws and everything falls apart.

Good Luck!

How many bricks must be incorporated into the interior of the house?

Q. A house is designed to have passive solar energy features. Brickwork is to be incorporated into the interior of the house to act as a heat absorber. Each brick weighs approximately 1.8 kg. The specific heat of the brick is 0.85 J/g·K. How many bricks must be incorporated into the interior of the house to provide the same total heat capacity as 1.4 x10 ^3 gal of water?

A. 1.4 x10 ^3 gal of water @ 3.784 litres / gal = 5.3 X 10 ^3 litres

=5.3 X10^6 millilitres = 5.3 X 10^6 grams

----------------------

5.3 X 10^6 grams)(4.18joules /gC) = 2.21 X 10 ^ 7 joules / C
from water

where can you get good jobs for interior designer?

Q.

A. In most of the Architectural practices , interior designers are needed. And also there are practices which are only into interior and show-room architecture.

Jobs in the future, i am thinking about becoming an interior designer. Give me your suggestions!?
Q. I am in year 9 and I have realised that soon enough I will have to start thinking about what I want to do in the future, because soon enough I will be leaving school and I will have to make some sort of decision for what I would like to do. I have never really thought about it until recently, and I thought that I should really start thinking about it now or else I will be stuck when I finish high school.

I have been thinking about becoming an interior designer, but I was just wondering...
1. what exactly do interior designers do
2. how much money would I make if i became one

my mum told me that the help with the inside of the house and figure out where to put things and what would work well with the house, and she also said some interior designers do make alot of money and most are well paid.

please help !
best, most descriptive answer gets 10 points

A. As a creative field, you need to design interior environments: can you visualize what a space will look like? And draw architectural drawings showing furniture placement, window treatments, accessories, etc? You need some artistic talents and drawing ability as well as have good spatial orientation. You need to understand environmental psychology, work flow and traffic flow, color psychology. Then you need to study antiques, history of design, learn furniture styles of various historic periods, and more. So after high school, you need to be accepted into a renowned school of design. You will have to present a portfolio of your drawings to get accepted.

These are the people who make good money as designers, get on with good architectural firms, furniture designers & manufacturers, etc, as well as those who establish interior design firms and attact the sort of clients who can pay for their services.

At the low end are the interior decorators (or "dreck-orators" as a friend in interior design calls them). Most are wives of men with high-paying jobs, have good taste, and grew up knowing Sheraton and Chippendale. They don't make much money. They are glorified furniture salespeople and make a small percentage commission on their sales.

i was just wandering how you get into this kind of business, what courses i should take at uni or school, where i should go, etc.
please help!!

A. Contact the American Society of Interior Designers. They have a really good student program that will help you with all sorts of information on becoming a professional designer. You actually can join as a student and then attend meeting and seminars in your area, plus receive their publications and discounts.

If you're serious, your first step should be getting to know this orgnaization:

What are the salaries of interior designers?
Q. Now what I'm looking for is a possible job as an interior designer, and I would like to OWN a home, not rent one, and I would like to know if that salary can be enough to pay the bills, along with some left over. I would be living alone, plus the cost of a dog or another animal. Can anybody help me? Is interior design a good career choice to go into?

Thanks!!

A. Interior designers are plentiful... It takes a LONG time to establish your credentials in that industry. Start by applying for work in a business that features interior design as a service offering and learn the business. That experience should answer all your questions.

Good Luck

Can my mum go on become an interior designer?
Q. If my mum choses to get her diploma in Interior Design would she be able to become a Interior Designer or does she have to take a university course to do that? The course is offered by Thompson Education Direct.

Thanks.

A. Postsecondary educationâespecially a bachelor's degreeâis recommended for entry-level positions in interior design. In addition, 24 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico register or license interior designers. Following formal training, graduates usually enter a 1-year to 3-year apprenticeship to gain experience before taking a national licensing exam or joining a professional association. Designers in States that do not require the exam may opt to take it as proof of their qualifications. The National Council administers the licensing exam for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). To be eligible to take the exam, applicants must have at least 6 years of combined education and experience in interior design, of which at least 2 years constitute postsecondary education in design. Once candidates have passed the qualifying exam, they are granted the title of Certified, Registered, or Licensed Interior Designer, depending on the State. Continuing education is required in order to maintain one's licensure.

Training programs are available from professional design schools or from colleges and universities and usually take 2 to 4 years to complete. Graduates of 2-year and 3-year programs are awarded certificates or associate's degrees in interior design and normally qualify as assistants to interior designers upon graduation. Graduates with bachelor's degrees usually qualify for entry into a formal design apprenticeship program. Basic coursework includes computer-aided design (CAD), drawing, perspective, spatial planning, color and fabrics, furniture design, architecture, ergonomics, ethics, and psychology.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits approximately 250 postsecondary institutions with programs in art and design. Most of these schools award a degree in interior design. Applicants may be required to submit sketches and other examples of their artistic ability.

The Foundation for Interior Design Education Research also accredits interior design programs that lead to a bachelor's degree. In 2005, there were 137 accredited bachelor's degree programs in interior design in the United States, located primarily in schools of art, architecture, and home economics.

After the completion of formal training, interior designers will enter a 1-year to 3-year apprenticeship to gain experience before taking a licensing exam. Most apprentices work in design or architecture firms under the strict supervision of an experienced designer. Apprentices also may choose to gain experience working as an in-store designer in furniture stores. The NCIDQ offers the Interior Design Experience Program (IDEP), which helps entry-level interior designers gain valuable work experience by supervising work experience and offering mentoring services and workshops to new designers.

Following the apprenticeship, designers will take the national licensing exam or choose to become members of a professional association. Because registration or licensure is not mandatory in all States, membership in a professional association is an indication of an interior designer's qualifications and professional standing. The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the largest professional association for interior designers in the United States. Interior designers can qualify for membership with at least a 2-year or higher degree and work experience.

In addition to national licensure and membership in a professional association, optional certifications in kitchen and bath design are available from the National Kitchen and Bath Association. The association offers three different levels of certification for kitchen and bath designers, each completed through training seminars that culminate in certification exams.

Employers increasingly prefer interior designers who are familiar with CAD software. Interior designers also increasingly need to know the basics of architecture and engineering in order to ensure that their designs meet building safety codes.

In addition to possessing technical knowledge, interior designers must be creative, imaginative, and persistent and must be able to communicate their ideas in writing, visually, and verbally. Because tastes in style can change quickly, designers need to be well read, open to new ideas and influences, and quick to react to changing trends. Problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and under pressure are important traits. People in this field need self-discipline to start projects on their own, to budget their time, and to meet deadlines and production schedules. Good business sense and sales ability also are important, especially for those who freelance or run their own business.

Beginning interior designers receive on-the-job training and normally need 1 to 3 years of training before they can advance to higher level positions. Experienced designers in large firms may advance to chief designer, design department head, or some other supervisory position. Some experienced designers open their own firms or decide to specialize in one aspect of interior design. Other designers leave the occupation to become teachers in schools of design or in colleges and universities. Many faculty members continue to consult privately or operate small design studios to complement their classroom activities.

What subjects do you have to study in high school to be a carpenter/interior designer?
Q. Considering my options. Thanks!

A. I'd say art and design for interior design. For carpenter work if you have woodwork/ technology or some engineering based subject then you should be fine. I'd take English and Maths for good measure :) Hope that helped!

Is it easy to become an interior designer?
Q. Hi all, I want to be an interior designer when I grow up. I am 13 but what subjects should I take and what income does it get? Cheers

A. First off, don't say cheers. Secondly either be female or gay.
Lastly if your none of the above you won't make it.

What are the average rates and hours of an interior designer?
Q.

A. According to the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupation Outlook Handbook. You should refer to the entire article to see more relevant information: Interior Designers
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos293.htm

Work environment. Working conditions and places of employment vary. Interior designers employed by large corporations or design firms generally work regular hours in well-lighted and comfortable settings. Designers in smaller design consulting firms or those who freelance generally work on a contract, or job, basis. They frequently adjust their workday to suit their clientsâ schedules and deadlines, meeting with clients during evening or weekend hours when necessary. Consultants and self-employed designers tend to work longer hours and in smaller, more congested environments.

Interior design salaries vary widely with the specialty, type of employer, number of years of experience, and reputation of the individuals. Among salaried interior designers, those in large specialized design and architectural firms tend to earn higher and more stable salaries. Interior designers working in retail stores usually earn a commission, which can be irregular.

For residential design projects, self-employed interior designers and those working in smaller firms usually earn a per-hour consulting fee, plus a percentage of the total cost of furniture, lighting, artwork, and other design elements. For commercial projects, they might charge a per-hour consulting fee, charge by the square footage, or charge a flat fee for the whole project. Also, designers who use specialty contractors usually earn a percentage of the contractorâs earnings on the project in return for hiring the contractor. Self-employed designers must provide their own benefits.

Median annual earnings for wage and salary interior designers were $42,260 in May 2006. The middle 50 percent earned between $31,830 and $57,230. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $24,270, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $78,760.

How can i change interior roof fabric of old Manga89? is it available in market?

A. yea you can find the material at any upholstery shop. the headliner is just material stretched over a board you take down the board pull off the old material clean the area of the board where the old glue is usually will just sweep off, then lay new glue should come with material or just ask for it stretch the material and let dry then put board back up should last 10-15 years just did it on my 96 honda

Good Luck!

How do you make an interior design presentation board? What should be included on the board.?

Q. This is for a project updating an office for the school president.

A. I'd paint the board with the main wall color and have chips of any accent paint colors. Include samples of the carpet and any fabric's you'll be using, as well as wood stains, and photos of the furniture and accessories. And, don't forget a scale drawing of the room showing the placement of the furniture.

Here's a site that shows some examples:

How to lock an interior door without ruining the doorframe?
Q. So it's come to my attention that family members are stealing my stuff while I'm out of the house. I pay board to live in the house, so I believe I'm entitled to some security.

I want to attach a lock to the door, but with the minimal amount of damage to the doorframe and the actual door. Can anyone think of a way to do this?

A. Change the existing doorknob (passage or possibly privacy) to one that locks with a key(security or entry) You can get one to match so it will hardly be noticeable and will not harm the door or jamb. good luck.

Q. We've just finished completely renovating our house and it's virtually unfurnished. We now want to start decorating but every interior designer we speak to says "tell us what you want". The problem is, we don't know what we want! Where do we start?

A. Start with FUNCTION.

What functions do you want this room to serve?
====================================
for instance, you may know you want it as the dining room, but do you also expect the kids to study here, for this table to be used for board games, for this room to show off collections?

A. Change the existing doorknob (passage or possibly privacy) to one that locks with a key(security or entry) You can get one to match so it will hardly be noticeable and will not harm the door or jamb. good luck.

5.3 X 10^6 grams)(4.18joules /gC) = 2.21 X 10 ^ 7 joules / C
from water
----------------------
Bricks:
(1800 grams)(0.85 joules/ gK)= 1530 joules per brick
