Q. I am in year 9 and I have realised that soon enough I will have to start thinking about what I want to do in the future, because soon enough I will be leaving school and I will have to make some sort of decision for what I would like to do. I have never really thought about it until recently, and I thought that I should really start thinking about it now or else I will be stuck when I finish high school.

I have been thinking about becoming an interior designer, but I was just wondering...
1. what exactly do interior designers do
2. how much money would I make if i became one

my mum told me that the help with the inside of the house and figure out where to put things and what would work well with the house, and she also said some interior designers do make alot of money and most are well paid.

please help !
best, most descriptive answer gets 10 points

A. As a creative field, you need to design interior environments: can you visualize what a space will look like? And draw architectural drawings showing furniture placement, window treatments, accessories, etc? You need some artistic talents and drawing ability as well as have good spatial orientation. You need to understand environmental psychology, work flow and traffic flow, color psychology. Then you need to study antiques, history of design, learn furniture styles of various historic periods, and more. So after high school, you need to be accepted into a renowned school of design. You will have to present a portfolio of your drawings to get accepted.

These are the people who make good money as designers, get on with good architectural firms, furniture designers & manufacturers, etc, as well as those who establish interior design firms and attact the sort of clients who can pay for their services.

At the low end are the interior decorators (or "dreck-orators" as a friend in interior design calls them). Most are wives of men with high-paying jobs, have good taste, and grew up knowing Sheraton and Chippendale. They don't make much money. They are glorified furniture salespeople and make a small percentage commission on their sales.
